Organizing Physical Space
What is component 2E?
This component concerns the physical arrangement of a classroom, and how it should be organized. The classroom should foster student engagement, limit distractions, and encourage good use of resources.
Why do you need it?
It is the responsibility of the teacher to make sure students are safe, so the teacher should avoid anything that could possibly harm a student. Also, it is really difficult to focus on learning if there is a pole blocking the view of the board, the sun shining through the window is giving you a headache, or the noise through the open door is distracting you. Therefore, the teacher and students should be able to make adaptions, so that they can return their focus to the lesson. The room should allow for different types of instruction, to increase student engagement.
What are the elements?
Safety and accessibility: Students are not going to be able to focus on learning if they are concerned about their safety. In order to optimize engagement, the room should be arranged so that there are not safety hazards, students are able to see the board, and students have any need resources.
Arrangement of furniture and use of physical resources: The classroom should be accommodating to different types of instruction. This also means that students should be able to change the environment, whether they draw the blinds on the windows or close the classroom door to block out distracting noises. Physical resources, like computers for example, should also be used wisely.
In the classroom:
*Have any long cords travel along the side of the wall, and tape it to the ground.
*Have cubbies for students to put their backpacks in to prevent them from being a tripping hazard.
*Arrange different areas of the classroom to support different types of instruction. The room may have a desk area, carpet area, table for group work, and individual computer stations.
*The teacher could have “resource stations” where students can borrow paper, pencils, rulers, scissors, and other supplies.
