Canva.com is a tool that can be used to create posters, cards, invitations, business cards, and many other things. The program provides the user with hundreds of backgrounds, images, fonts, and frames for free, and even more of a fee. I used this resource to create a poster outlining classroom expectations and procedures. While I created this poster from scratch, there is the option to use a design that someone else formatted, and you just plug in what you want it to say. Once you have choose a design, you can add text, elements, or change the background. Under the "Elements" tab, you can find photos, shapes, frames, grids and charts. To add something to your project, simply drag it to where you would like it, or click and it will place it in the middle of the page. You can also upload some of your own images. My poster was for a math classroom, so for my background, I uploaded a picture of some of my math homework.
Canva and component 2.C: I used Canva to make a poster that outlined classroom expectations and procedures, and this falls under classroom management in Danielson's framework. More specifically, it is relevant to the component concerning management of classroom procedures. These procedures are being used to optimize instruction time. This poster was created for a high school math class, so the poster emphasizes the importance of preparedness and responsibility. The poster tells students that they need to bring their device, headphones, notebook, and note packet to class, which relates to management of materials and resources in component 2.E. Also, by having procedures clearly establish, time can be saved during transitions. For example, students should have no excuse to run to their lockers because the poster tells them exactly what they will need for class. By the teacher sharing the expectations and procedures with the students, the classroom will run much smoother.
Artifact Reflection:
What did you enjoy about creating the artifact?
I enjoyed the amount of creativity that this program allowed for. The wide selection of images, fonts, and backgrounds allowed the user to make their project truly unique. It was easy to use, and fairly self-explanatory. There is so much that you can do with this program, and it is not just limited to making posters. Although I did not use one of the pre-made designs for this project, they could be helpful in the future if I were to ever need to be able to make a quick project.
How can you use this tool in your future classroom?
As shown by my project, I could use this tool to create a poster of my classroom procedures. Canva could also be something that students are using. They could use it to create their own posters about what they are learning in class. The students could also use it to create invitations to school activities or their presentations. I think students would really enjoy using Canva, and I am excited to introduce as a tool they can use.
