Showing Professionalism
What is component 4F?
Presenting yourself in a professional manner is important for students and the profession. Teachers need to have a strong moral compass that is displayed in the classroom. Teachers can show professionalism in numerous ways; through conversations with students and colleagues, how they dress, by prioritizing the needs of students, and being honest and fair. These actions help to gain the respect of students, parents, and colleagues. Teachers are also obligated to abide by school policies, and model behavior that they wish to see in their students.
Why do you need it?
Many people in society still refuse to see teachers as profession, but rather as people who hang out with kids all day. Teachers should be striving to disprove this misconception through their behavior. Teachers also need to be behaving in a way that they would want their students to mimic. Students deserve a teacher who is focused on meeting their needs and to be in an environment that values fairness, honesty, and integrity.
What are the elements?
Integrity and ethical conduct: Teachers should show integrity, whether with students, with colleagues, in the supermarket, or during a night out with friends.
Service to students: Students' needs should be a priority to teachers, and the teacher is responsible for providing any available resources that could increase student learning.
Advocacy: Teachers are to support their students' best interests and understanding their needs.
Decision making: Teachers solve problems with students in mind, not personal gain or ease.
Compliance with school and district regulations: Teachers need to follow any school rules, and should hold themselves to the same behavioral standards as the students are.
In the classroom:
*When involved in helping write an IEP for a student with an exceptionality, the teacher should push for what they believe the student needs.
*A teacher believes his students need to be more timely in turning in work, so he displays this behavior by return student work in an efficient manner. By modeling the behavior to students, they will see the advantages of behaving similarly.
*When a teacher makes a mistake, they need to own it, and through this show students that integrity is important.
