Planning & Preparation
A successful lesson requires planning and preparation. When selecting what to teach, the teacher should keep the big picture in mind. The lesson needs to build off of what students already know, and prepare them for what they are going to learn in the future. The lesson will also need a learning outcome and an assessment to see if it was met. This results from assessment can be used to guide the lesson, whether more instruction is need or if students are ready for new material. The teacher should also identify resources that will be helpful in reaching learning outcomes. Teachers should also be knowledgeable of their students to know how to best teach them. These steps planning and preparation are outlined in the different components of domain 1.
It is important that teachers show understanding and practice of these components in order to plan meaningful lessons. Teachers with knowledge of content, pedagogy, and students are able to keep students engaged in the lesson. By forming learning outcomes, both students and teacher know what is supposed to be taken away from the lesson. Formative and summative assessment then allows the teacher to know if students have reached the learning outcomes, and how to proceed. The planning and preparation step is important for a functional learning environment.
The teacher I work with for my virtual co-op shared that she enjoys using goformative.com and Quizlet Live in her classroom. She uses these tech tools regularly as a type of formative assessment. She then uses results from these assessments to guide her instruction. She also emphasized the importance of having knowledge of students, especially when working with students who are struggling. Teachers need to know what motivates their students and how to help when they are struggling.
