Classroom Environment
The teacher should create a classroom environment that is focused on learning. To achieve this, the teacher should set clear behavioral expectations, be respectful to students, and discipline and encourage students. The classroom's physical environment can also have an effect on student learning. By having control over these factors, the teacher is allowing students' focus to be on learning. These components can be used to create a positive learning environment.
These components help to limit distractions from learning in the classroom. Students are less able to learn when they do not feel safe or comfortable in the environment. Students deserve to feel respected and safe, and it is the responsibility of the teacher to strive to achieve this. The organization of physical environment can also be distracting to students, and to some extent, students should have the freedom to make adjustments like closing the door or windows and moving to a quieter area.
My virtual co-op teacher shared a copy of her classroom expectations and procedures. This list covered everything from what to bring to class, to the grading scale, to work they should be doing outside of class. It provided a clear outline of what is expected from the students, and what happens when these expectations are not met. She shared that by having this document, it saves a lot of time through not having to deal with repetitive issues. If a student forgets what they need for class, she'll reference this document instead of explaining it to every student who forgets.
