Growing and Developing Professionally
What is component 4E?
The field of education is constantly changing, and teachers need to be responsive to these changes. They should be developing their knowledge of pedagogy, content, and technology. Teachers can learn through one another, by discussing what is working or not working in their classroom, lesson planning together, and sharing activities. Professional development can also occur through reading journal articles, attending conferences, and taking classes. Experienced teachers can also contribute to helping their colleagues grow in the profession. Teachers need to be constantly looking for new ways to engage students and increase learning.
Why do you need it?
Students deserve to be taught the most recent information, and content is always changing, whether something new is discovered, something is disproved, or there is a new explanation for something. Teachers need to continue to develop their knowledge, so that they are adequately prepared to teach students. Teachers can also be learning new ways to teach and engage students in order to increase learning. They can develop their pedagogical knowledge through working with their colleagues and other educators.
What are the elements?
Enhancement of knowledge and pedagogical skill: Teachers continue to develop their knowledge through taking courses, reading scholastic articles, and developing their teaching skills.
Receptivity of feedback from colleagues: Teachers encourage colleagues to offer feedback, and they reflect on this feedback to improve their teaching.
Service to the profession: Experienced teachers have lots to share with colleagues, and if they feel that they have an idea that would help other classrooms, it needs to be shared. Whether through writing a journal article or presenting at a conference, fellow educators can benefit through the teacher's experience.
In the classroom:
*A teacher spends time reading journal articles on what they teach, to increase their understanding of the content.
*Even with a busy schedule, teachers should find time for online classes or classes at a local college to continue learning.
*A teacher has a colleague sit in during class, and asks for feedback on the lesson.
*A new teacher works with an experienced teacher, for help with lesson planning and ideas on how to teach specific material.
