Communicating with Families
What is component 4C?
Although a student's family may be too busy to play a big role in their child's education, it is still important that teachers are providing opportunities for them to become involved. This could be as simple as communicating student performance to having them come into the school to help. Parent involvement usually occurs more often in elementary school, but teachers should continue to provide opportunities even through high school. The partnership of teacher and parent can reduce confusion or inconsistencies, and shows that the student's success is important to both parties.
Why do you need it?
Parents deserve to know how their students are performing in school. Some parents will care enough to help students at home with things they are struggling with in school, whether academic or behavioral. Students also often respect and admire their parents, and their view of education will be shaped from this. This is why it is important to communicate student progress with parents, as the parent can then show their student that they care about their learning.
What are the elements?
Information about the instructional program: Teachers should be providing parents frequent information about what students are learning and doing in class.
Information about individual students: Parents should also be receiving current information of their child's performance.
Engagement of families in the instructional program: Families are offered opportunities to become involved in their child's learning, whether at home or in school.
In the classroom:
*A teacher sends home a weekly newsletter about what the class is learning and will be doing in the coming week.
*When students have a test returned, they are required to have it signed by a family member for a grade.
*Having class social media is an easy way to reach families and community members. Activities and projects the students are doing could be posted here, and students could even become involved in sharing posts. This could be through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other social media outlet that families would frequently use.
*Families are invited on field trips, to view presentations, help with activities, and other events that involve their child.
