Instruction
Teachers should be teaching with passion and engaging students. Teachers can gain the respect of students through showing they care about their lives and wanting to know what interests them. Teachers can also draw students into the lesson by actively discussing the material with them during the lesson. This is also a way to assess where student understanding is, and if adjustments to pace are needed. If an adjustment is necessary, the teacher should not hesitate to make changes to the plan, as students need to learn the material. There are many ways to engage students in lessons.
Students are going to learn more if they are engaged. By relating the lesson to what interest students or is relevant in their lives, students will see the value in what they are learning. Assessment in instruction will allow teachers to see if students are understanding the content. It can be used to guide instruction, showing if they need to go at a slower pace or if students are prepared to proceed to new information. If pace is adjusted for students, they will be able to build upon their prior learning.
My virtual co-op teacher shared that there are many tech tools that have been successful during instruction in engaging students. She uses interactive whiteboards to have students complete an array of different learning activities. She also shared that she will use Kahoot for formative assessment. Students find this to be a fun game, and she is able to assess how students are comprehending the material. She has a flipped classroom, so this limits instruction time in the physical classroom, and allows more time for engaging activities.
